AIGA Design Archives: One

The AIGA Design Archives are chock-full of award-winning design. Searching through the archives is an interactive way to discover successful and respected firms and designers. And, of course, it is always there when you need a little inspiration.

Creative Director Timothy Bahash created some amazing packaging for 4mula (Philadelphia, PA). The products are beautiful visually, and they dictate a system of order by having square edges that fit together perfectly, saving space and creating aesthetic organization.

One of the most respected and well-known professors in our program here at Ferris State University is Linda Powell. Linda worked for several years at Herman Miller in Zeeland, MI. Her work is well represented in the AIGA Design Archives. Linda designed the Herman Miller Christmas Party Poster in 1977, and it is obvious to me now that Linda is basically obsessed with designing for the holidays. The poster comprises cut-out, folded geometric shapes, creating the simple shape of a Christmas tree.

Tim Bruce is the creative director at Lowercase, Inc. a design firm based in Chicago. He has also recently been named the president of AIGA Chicago’s board of directors. One of his more recent works in the archives is a book that was designed for the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS). The book is communicates CVLS’ work for pro bono clients. Essentially, it is an annual report and communication tool for fundraising, recruiting, and community building.

William Drenttel is a partner, with Jessica Helfand, in Winterhouse, a design studio in Northwest Connecticut. Their work focuses on publishing and editorial development; new media; and cultural, educational and literary institutions. Recent clients include The Poetry Foundation, Nextbook, New England Journal of Medicine, the U.S. State Department, Norman Rockwell Museum, Yale Law School, New York University School of Journalism, University of Chicago Press and the National Design Awards. Their imprint, Winterhouse Editions, publishes design criticism and literary works by writers including Susan Sontag, Leon Wieseltier, Jessica Helfand, Paul Auster, Paul Celan and Franz Kafka, among others.” -DesignObserver.com

Michael Bierut is a graphic designer, design critic and educator. Bierut was vice president of graphic design at Vignelli Associates. Since 1990 he has been a partner in the New York office of Pentagram. He has won hundreds of design awards and his work is represented in several permanent collections including: the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York; the Library of Congress in Washington, DC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); the Denver Art Museum. Bierut served as the national president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) from 1998 to 2001. Bierut is a senior critic in graphic design at the Yale School of Art. Bierut is also the co-editor of three Looking Closer graphic design anthologies. He is also a founding writer of the Design Observer blog with Rick Poynor, William Drenttel and Jessica Helfand.
